Don’t have time to watch our latest video on installing linear heat detection? Here is the video transcript for you to take a moment to read about our best practices about installation.
This video will provide a basic guide on best practices when installing Protectowire Linear Heat Detectors. The information provided should be used in compliance with applicable codes and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Additional information can be found in the Protectowire Installation, Operation & Maintenance Manual that is available on our website.
Protectowire Linear Heat Detector is a continuous heat detector. It is designed to be used on a compatible fire alarm control module or panel. The Protectowire Linear Heat Detector must be installed in accordance with applicable sections of NFPA 72 or as required by the local AHJ.
Proper handling and storage is mandatory to ensure detector performance. Exposure to heat above its fixed temperature rating will render the linear heat detector unusable and may not be obvious by its visual appearance.
Before starting the installation, be sure to test the continuity of the linear heat detector with an ohm meter to ensure it has not been damaged in transit. In order to confirm that the detector is fully operational, your meter reading should read as an open circuit or infinite. Note: If you measure a short, do not install the Protectowire Linear Heat Detector and call customer service.
Installation best practices
DO NOT make ninety degree (90%) bends. All bends should be made by hand without the use of tools with a minimum 2.5 inch (6.4 cm) radius.
DO NOT over stretch the Detector runs; some wire “sag” between fasteners is normal.
DO NOT over tighten the fasteners as this may compromise the outer jacket or crush the inner insulation which may cause “false alarms.” All fasteners must allow the wire to expand and contract with temperature changes.
DO NOT use wire nuts. All connections must be made via compression terminals and/or Protectowire approved splicing devices.
DO NOT leave it on the floor or step on it or set ladders on it during installation.
DO NOT place it where it will be subject to mechanical damage by equipment processes.
DO NOT paint this detector per UL and FM requirements.
ALWAYS install with Protectowire approved fasteners only.
Protectowire supplied or approved fasteners should only be used as they are designed to lightly clamp the detector which enables tension to be applied.
Messenger Wire is available with any model detector. It consists of high strength stainless steel wire, which is wrapped around the detector. This is typically used as a support wire designed to simplify the installation of the detector in areas where mounting is difficult.
