| The Haverhill-Bath
covered bridge is located one-quarter mile north of
U.S. Rte. 302 at Woodsville on N.H. Rte. 135 over
the Ammonoosuc River. Built in 1829, it is the
oldest authenticated covered bridge in the State.
Suddenly this past summer the bridge was struck by
arson.
According to the Haverhill Town
Manager someone started a small fire on the sidewalk
near the center of the bridge around 1:00 AM. The
fire was started under the wood boards that cover an
abandoned waterline running alongside the sidewalk.

The Protectowire
Linear Heat Detection System on the bridge detected
the fire and alerted the local fire department who
arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze before
extensive damage took place. Upon inspection, the
damage appeared to be limited to the waterline
covering boards and a slight charring of some truss
members.

) who were selected by the Towns of Haverhill and
Bath for the rehabilitation of the bridge last year
visited the site on August 16, 2002 and observed
first hand the fire damage and stated that, “the
fire damage to the structural portions of the bridge
was very minor and included heavy soot on several
members and slight charring of a few lattice
members.” Mr. James also stated that, “ The Town was
very fortunate that they had detection measures in
place and a fast response from the local fire
company”.
